Dessert: the most evil cake in the world

German chocolate cake from scratch. Five words that strike fear in the hearts of third world dictators. J wanted chocolate cake. I made it …. but with 30% more evil than usual. Homemade 3-layer devil’s food cake with the classic German chocolate cake icing. It pulled a knife on me when I went to frost it. It will be dealt with harshly tonight.

Dessert: pecan & honey crepes

Pecans roasted with butter and brown sugar, drizzled with honey, wrapped in a crepe, and dusted with confectioners sugar. Wow …

Dinner: mushroom ricotta crepes

Homemade crepes filled with ricotta cheese, garlic & sauteed mushrooms are topped with shredded Swiss and parmesan cheese. They are then baked and broiled. Yum!

Project of the day: giant cookie of doom

I think this is self explanatory …

Bad idea of the day: alcoholic fun dip

Fun Dip was made for dipping in vodka, triple sec, and lemon juice.

Tonight’s dinner: mushroom and tofu pot pie

Sauteed mushrooms and tofu with parmesan and ricotta cheese. Topped with Swiss and wrapped in homemade pie crust. This is way better than the words ‘pot pie’ can convey.

Tonight’s dinner: cheddar cheese pie

High-calorie homemade pie crust filled with sharp cheddar cheese – yum!

Tonight’s dinner – sweet potato and pear soup

This is a favorite at our house. Here’s my recipe:

3 pears
3 largeish sweet potatoes
1 medium onion
1-3 cloves of garlic
Tbsp. Butter
A box of veggie broth (or 2 cans)
1-2 cups cream or whole milk
Salt and pepper to taste
Sour cream
Cilantro or spearmint leaves to garnish (optional)

Dice the onions. Crush the garlic. Brown in a pan with the butter. Peel and chunk up the sweet potatoes in 3/4″-1″ pieces. Core, peel, and chunk up the pears. Once the onions are clear, add the sweet potatoes and pears. Mix and simmer for a couple of minutes.

Add the contents of the pan to a pot and cover with veggie broth. Bring to boil for 20 minutes or until the sweet potatoes are soft. Allow to cool a bit and process in the food processor or blender until smooth. Add the milk or cream. Reheat soup but don’t allow to boil. Serve with a dollop of sour cream and chopped cilantro or spearmint.
